…Time for this week’s story…
The Dark Side Has Cookies
Long ago, in a far, far away galaxy, two space knights fought for their respective orders. The white-clad knight with a blue laser sword stood atop a ridge in a dry, rocky desert on a world in the outskirts of both territories. The black-clad knight held a red beam-sword, which the black knights insist is different from a laser-sword. He stood opposite the white knight on a dark and auspicious night, free of poor weather or interruptions.
They were two shining knights in their orders, each accomplished, powerful, and loved by their people. A challenge had been laid out and both arrived with gusto. The death of either would devastate the morale of their comrades, but these two had a score to settle. They met to finish things once and for all.
Using their advanced technology they leapt through the air, acres at a time if they needed to, chasing each other across the battlefield. They landed from high falls on their toes like the drop of a feather and moved with extraordinary speed. Their swords cut through rocks with ease and sparks erupted from their clashing. As they stared at each other across the rocky ridge, catching their breath, the white knight removed his helmet. He wanted to ask the questions that had lingered in his mind over the years of their rivalry.
“All those years ago, when we were trapped on the demon planet Zakarak, I thought I had made a friend. I thought you could join the order of White Knights and create a bridge of peace between the light and dark sides of space knights!”
“I thought the same thing. You'd be a perfect Black Knight. I thought we would return to my world to play games and eat cookies, but you wouldn't accept my invitation to return to my world. You wouldn't even hear it my way.”
“Cookies?”
“What?”
“What are cookies?” asked the White Knight. The Black Knight removed his helmet and gave him a puzzled look.
“Is this a joke? Have you really never had a cookie?”
“Never heard of ‘em. Why would I joke about that?”
The Black Knight stared at his opponent for a moment, then shook his head. He let out a frustrated grunt then turned off his sword. The light vanished and he clipped it back in its holster.
“I can't kill someone who has never had a cookie. Come on.” The Black Knight signaled with a wave of his arm and walked away.
Although puzzled, the White Knight turned off his sword as well and followed the dark-haired Black Knight. When they arrived at the Black Knight’s ship, he pulled out a metal pan and some strange, light brown goo. He plucked small drops of the goo and placed them on the metal sheet in a pattern. Once finished, he assured the White Knight he meant no harm in pulling out his sword and slowly placed it over the sheet before turning it on. The goo melted into circles and after a few minutes, the knight turned off his weapon. A delicious aroma filled the cabin and he assured the White Knight that they needed to wait. A few minutes later, the Black Knight presented the White Knight with a plate of what he called cookies.
The first bite was a warm, delicious tidal wave of delightful sweetness the White Knight never expected. He devoured one, then another, then two more. Soon, all the cookies were gone and he asked if there were more. The Black Knight happily made more cookies, sharing his knowledge about them. The White Knight elaborated on his love of these things called cookies and stumbled upon another revelation.
“I may even like this more than ice cream,” he said.
“What’s ice cream?” asked the Black Knight.
“It’s iced cream that’s whipped and mixed with sugar,” the White Knight explained.
“It’s what?”
“Wait, you’ve never tried ice cream?” The White Knight was beside himself. The two of them finished making another batch of cookies then flew over to the White Knight’s ship where he had ice cream available. He served the Black Knight a bowl with a few flavors, along with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. The Black Knight’s eyes bloomed with wonder and he dove in for another bite. The White Knight warned him not to eat too quickly.
It was not long before it occurred to them to put their two creations together. As if the stars aligned, what they tasted in that moment was the crescendo their entire lives had built to. Even having children or leading their people would never compare to this day. They were the first in all the universe to taste this delicious treat. The dark and light had come together to create something amazing. They feasted on their supply and experimented with the treats. They sandwiched ice cream between two cookies, crumbled cookies into their ice cream, mixed ice cream with raw dough, and ate until their stomachs were full.
Most importantly, they talked through their problems. Not only were their own personal issues sorted out, thousands of years of bad blood were overcome that night. They watched the sun rise eating cookies and ice cream, discussing how they could possibly bring this revelation to their worlds. As space holds darkness and light, each of their orders had pieces the other was missing. Through a love of cookies and ice cream, they were able to see that the other had great things to offer. When they sought out that knowledge, what they found was wondrous.
In the end, they had some ideas about their strategy, but they had come to a singular conclusion above everything else. That afternoon they departed together with a common goal. They agreed to work together for the rest of their lives to create a new world where the dark and light can share cookies and ice cream together, in peace.
Oh I love this story!
